John Elliott of Amec Foster Wheeler receives Lifetime Achievement Award from Coking.com
May 4, 2016 John Elliott was honored for his Lifetime Achievement in the Delayed Coking industry by the Refining Community. Evan Hyde and Gary Pitman of Coking.com presented the award at the 2016 RefComm® Coking.com conference in Galveston, Texas, USA.
RefComm® is the premier technical forum for project and process engineers, operators, maintenance, and other leaders to share knowledge and ideas relating to the Coking, CatCracker, Sulfur Recovery and I&E.
John was one of Foster Wheeler’s senior-most experts in refinery configuration planning and optimization, providing expert in-house consulting to Foster Wheeler’s process design resources for refinery projects.
He is recognized as one of the world’s leading authorities in heavy oils processing and provides in-house expert consulting to Foster Wheeler process services related to the design, start-up and operation of refineries utilizing Foster Wheeler’s proprietary Selective Yield Delayed Coking technology. In this capacity he is involved in nearly all delayed coking and visbreaking projects involving Foster Wheeler technology.

John began his career at Foster Wheeler in 1966 as an intern during his junior year at Penn State University. He joined the company full time in 1967 after completing his Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering and worked as a Process Engineer on heavy oil projects. Throughout his 47+ year career with Amec Foster Wheeler, John has held various key positions such as Chief Process Engineer-Heavy Oils, Manager of Heavy Oils and Director- Coking Technology. He has dedicated his career to developing and advancing Delayed Coking technology and has been instrumental in developing the correlations used today in Amec Foster Wheeler’s SYDEC (Selective Yield Delayed Coking) Programe.
Achieving international acclaim, John has travelled globally to promote Delayed Coking technology and has presented numerous technical papers at various prestigious forums. Many of the rules employed today by Amec Foster Wheeler in the design of Delayed Coking Units are called ‘Elliott Rules’ as a mark of credibility. John retired from Foster Wheeler in 2014.
