Motiva-Port-ArthurMay 16, 2011 – Port Arthur Refinery commemorates major expansion milestone

The expansion project already has created about 6,500 jobs, and Motiva will have created as many as 300 full-time positions by the refinery’s completion.
A “topping off” ceremony was held Wednesday, Feb. 10, at the Motiva Refinery in Port Arthur, Texas, to commemorate the placement of the 375-foot, or almost 32 story-tall, DCU2 (Delayed Coker Unit).

It is the city’s tallest structure and a major milestone in the epic expansion project that will create one of the largest refineries in the world.

During the event, Motiva executives expressed their appreciation to the community for its support of the expansion. Company executives also reinforced Motiva’s commitment to hiring qualified and highly skilled residents and using competitive local contractors and subcontractors.

“At the core of every business decision we make, there is an unwavering commitment to operate our business with economic, social and environmental responsibility,” explained Motiva President and Chief Executive Officer Bob Pease.

Local businessman, Chris Street described how business from the expansion project has given a much-needed boost to Threads, an embroidery and screen-printing company he co-owns with his wife Leisa.

Port Arthur resident Vincent Vu, lead man in the site’s laydown yard, talked about how the opportunity to work on the expansion project encouraged him to pursue training to improve his skills and his chances of advancement.

The expansion project already has created about 6,500 jobs, and Motiva will have created as many as 300 full-time positions by the refinery’s completion.

When completed in early 2012, the expansion project will boost the refinery’s crude oil processing capacity by 325,000 barrels per day, the equivalent of building the first new refinery in the U.S. in three decades. With a total capacity of 600,000 barrels per day, the facility will be the largest oil refinery in the U.S.
