TotalPortArthurTotal Celebrates Transformation of Port Arthur Facility to Deep Conversion Refinery

May 5, 2011 – Total Port Arthur Refinery is celebrating the transformation of its facility to a Deep Conversion Refinery today. The safe startup and beneficial production of the Coker, the centerpiece of the facility’s Deep Conversion Project, occurred earlier this year marking the completion of the project.

It is part of Total’s business model that a successful refinery should be of appropriate complexity and flexibility to capitalize on the opportunities its market presents. The completion of the Deep Conversion Project in Port Arthur provides that complexity and flexibility. The refinery’s integration with the adjacent joint venture petrochemical facility provides additional market opportunities to maximize the profitability of the site.

Michel Bénézit, Executive Vice President of Total, President Refining and Marketing, will preside over today’s celebration along with senior representatives from Total’s management and about 200 invited guests from Southeast Texas.

“This project reflected our strategy of investing to enhance the efficiency and competitiveness of our large refining hubs worldwide, while at the same time reducing our environmental footprint,” Michel Bénézit said.

The Deep Conversion Project included a 50,000 barrel-per-day coker, a desulfurization unit, a vacuum distillation unit, and other related units. At its peak, there were about 4,700 skilled workers present on the construction site.

“The decision to bring the project to Port Arthur marked the Group’s confidence that the nearly 600 employees of this refinery had the resilience, determination and expertise to bring this investment to fruition,” said Darrell Jacob, Refinery Manager.

The new units increase the facility’s capacity to process heavy and sour crude oil and produce cleaner transportation fuels (ultra low sulfur diesel). The project was announced on February 12, 2008.
